A unique opportunity to purchase an exceptionally well-equipped and maintained late example of the rare Naylor (later Hutson) TF 1700 sports car finished in stunning Porsche Guards Red. This car has been the Naylor Car Club’s display car at the NEC Classic Car Show. The mileage is 57,500 and it has a new MoT with no advisories (next due 29 April 2026). It is located in North Yorkshire.
The TF 1700 was developed and hand-built by Naylor Cars PLC in the mid 1980s in its factory in Bradford. They were fully type-approved and had the full backing of the Austin Rover Group. The car was conceived by the Naylor brothers – the renowned MG Restoration specialists – as a faithful hand-built replica of the revered MG TF 1500 of the 1950s but with significantly more power and much improved steering, suspension and braking (including front disc brakes). The engine is an Austin/Rover “O” Series 1700cc producing 77BHP at 5180 rpm.
The factory produced 100 Naylor-badged cars before Naylor Cars PLC was acquired by the Hutson Motor Company which went on to produce a further 61 Hutson-badged cars. This example is Car 149. The chassis is steel as are the body panels which are mounted on a hand-built ash frame. This example was fitted with fibreglass wings as a precaution against any future problems with corrosion.
This car was built and registered in 1991 and sold by the Hutson Motor Company to its first owner in 1993. In 2009 it was purchased back by the Hutson family for their personal use. The present owner bought it from the family in 2013. On acquiring the brand new car, the first owner immediately set about up-grading it to very high specifications, making it a truly outstanding example of the marque. It was fully re-upholstered in beige Connolly leather with matching beige carpets, hood, tonneau and side screens. The seats were fitted with headrests and map pockets. Locking chrome door handles and locking fuel cap replaced the originals. The chrome wire wheels are attached the modern way with studs and nuts but with chrome spinners for the authentic period look. Front and rear gas adjustable shock absorber/spring units were fitted. The car was fitted with an electronic fuel pump, a King fuel filter, a sports air filter and a large-bore stainless steel straight-through sports exhaust. A custom-built walnut dash replaced the original along with a Hutson-badged wood-rimmed Motalita steering wheel. The car has an electronic immobilizer. It has a set of bespoke luggage – two fully-lined suitcases (of the same exterior material as the hood) with leather straps and a rain cover. The car has a bespoke Naylor soft cover in red.
The car comes with a comprehensive service history along with the workshop manual and the original glovebox Service and Operation manual. It has excellent tyres. It has been professionally serviced and maintained throughout its life. Work done under present ownership includes: top engine overhaul, replacement exhaust manifold, water pump, electronic fuel pump, alternator belt, timing belt, track rod ends, rear axle bearings and seals, rear shocks and springs, ignition leads set, steering rack, battery, rear brake cylinders, linings and brake piping, electronic fuel pump, coil, condenser and points. The carburettor was professionally refurbished in 2024.
The Naylor Car Club provides technical support and a vibrant social focus for Naylor and Hutson owners. The Club has a well-organized spares department. The club’s website provides comprehensive details of the genesis of the TF 1700. https://naylorcarclub.org.uk
